Fresh from selling out over 10,000 tickets at Japanโs legendary Budokan Arena, 2024 is already shaping up to be an incredible year for the band.ย The tour will see them hit another milestone as they prepare to appear at bothย Coachellaย andย Primavera Soundย festivals and will once again see their return to 88risingโs iconicย Head in the Clouds Festival, this time as headliners.
Recent single โOtona Blueโ took the world by storm last year, recording over 3.3 billion views on TikTok. The tour announcement follows recent critically acclaimed singlesย โToryanseโ,ย โHELLO (from The Tigerโs Apprentice)โย and โTokyo Callingโย โ which landed them their US late-night television debut onย Jimmy Kimmel Live! The group also showcased their inimitable performance style on their first worldwideย SEISHUNย Tour, which sold out completely in the U.S., and at music festivals likeย Mexico Cityโs Corona Capital Festivalย and 88risingโs New York and Los Angeles iterations of theย Head In The Clouds Music & Arts Festival.
ATARASHII GAKKO! (literally meaning โNEW SCHOOLโ in Japanese) are a group of four young women who are redefining what it means to be a girl group. They wear sailor-fuku (sailor suits) uniforms in a style that were worn by Japanese students back in the โ70s and โ80s with long skirts and pulled-up socks, while also looking toward the future of Japanese youth culture. Their aggressive and expressive dance moves, which they choreograph themselves, are a hybrid of the energy of Japanese butoh dance, heavy metal headbanging, and hip-hop street dancing. Musically, ATARASHII GAKKO! brings together elements of modern J-Pop, Showa-era kayokyoku, rap, punk, dance music, but it would be pointless to try to categorize them in any genre.
